Sexy Bible – Happy Humans

It took a while to decide what to title this post. I find this to be the opposite of what the Catholic Church exemplifies, yet what I feel should be exemplified and revered. Perhaps you can tell me your opinions on this.

A German Protestant youth group has put together a 2006 calendar with 12 staged photos depicting erotic scenes from the Bible.

Now, before I go any further with this, let me point out that this is in Europe. Having lived in Europe, I can tell you that nearly everyone there doesn’t have the hang-ups about sexuality that Americans do. Here in the U.S., sex is forbidden fruit. This mentality is what creates at least half of the problems with regard to addiction. The concept of this calendar in the United States would be thought of as blasphemy by far more many people than in Europe. Agreed? Well, here’s what the photographer says about nudity in the Bible:

Anyway, it doesn’t say anywhere in the Bible that you are forbidden to show yourself nude.

That’s true. But it is the following statement which I find the most commendable.

We wanted to represent the Bible in a different way and to interest young people.

That statement was made by a female model who posed nude as the prostitute Rahab (New Testament). Yes, this calendar was meant to draw young people to the Bible.

Brilliant!

We sell cars, alcohol, clothing, and a myriad of other things with sex. Why not religion?

Despite what many fundamentalists will say, this is not a contrary viewpoint to the Bible. In the first book of the Bible it says, “Go forth and multiply.” The only way to do that is to have sex. Sex, in and of itself, is NOT deviant behavior. It only becomes deviant when you project that it’s shameful to a society and then society only does what comes naturally; having sex. I mean, at some fundamental level, priests are working against the Bible. They are preventing themselves from doing what the Bible asks them to do. Let’s be honest, too. Several of them ARE having sex. So, the tenets of Catholicism aren’t even working in many cases.

I think it is bold for this youth group in Germany to bring this to the forefront and try to get sex out there openly, as it is in the Bible. I wish that it were possible for American youth groups to do this, but such a thing would come under so much scrutiny that we, as Americans, can’t even be leaders when it comes to religion. Let’s face it, being a world super power means having enough military and ammunition to defend oppression of far too many aspects of natural, human existence.

P.S. For those who are going to get all pissy and claim that I am unsupportive of the military and their plight to defend the freedoms we have, stop right there. This post is neither saying that I am unappreciative of the freedoms we DO have, nor that I am unsupportive of our military. I have a high appreciation for our freedoms, especially since I have lived outside of the United States. I also have the greatest esteem for our military and their ability to serve and protect the citizens of this country. I’m just saying that for as far as we’ve come as a nation is about as far as we have to go in many regards.

UPDATE: Due to popular demand, here is the site for the calendar itself. http://www.bibelkalender.de There are few pictures listed there and, I’m afraid, none of Rahab. I guess they keep that in reserve so that you have to order the calendar.

Sexomnia

TORONTO (AFP) – A Toronto area man was acquitted this week of sexual assault after a judge ruled he was asleep during the attack, a Canadian newspaper reported.

The acquitted 33-year-old landscaper had met a woman at a party in July. Both had been drinking and fell asleep on a couch.

The woman woke up to find the landscaper having sex with her and pushed him off. He immediately woke up, but told the court he only suspected they had had sex after going to the bathroom and finding he was still wearing a condom.

A sleep expert testified at his trial that the man suffered from sexomnia, a sort of sleep walking that includes sexual acts, likely brought on by alcohol, sleep deprivation and genetics.

The man had previously had “sleep sex” with four girlfriends, the court heard.

The judgment outraged women’s groups, according to the Toronto Sun report.

“This is infuriating. It’s another case of the courts not taking a woman seriously, adding yet another item to the list of excuses which men use for sexual assault,” Suzanne Jay of the Canadian Association of Sexual Assault Centres told the newspaper.

Here are my thoughts on this:

  • She had to be awfully drunk to wake up only AFTER he was inside of her.
  • Oddly, he had enough capacity of thought to put on a condom. Wouldn’t you think that a condition such as this that eliminates personal responsibility enough to be aquitted would be one that deals with a more unconscious event?
  • Two out of the 3 things that are thought to contribute to this disorder are controllable. Where is the personal responsibility here?
  • Keeping with the personal responsibility train of thought, if this happened with 4 other girlfriends, shouldn’t have he anticipated that it was a bad idea to fall asleep with someone he hardly knew?
  • Outraged women’s groups? What about women who are aquitted of doing harm because of PMS? Is that disorder any more valid than this one?
  • I’m not saying that the sexual assault should be excused. However, can we please agree that there was an error of judgement on the part of both people? Obviously, if this has happened to him before, he could have taken steps to protect this girl. Also, obviously, perhaps she shouldn’t have fallen asleep with someone she just met at a party. For both, the drinking was the most obvious error.

Sexomnia was discovered by sleep disorder researchers and a study is published in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry.

Yay Canada!

I swear the thought of immigrating becomes more prevalent with each passing year.

Here is what the a church has to say about sex:

“People love sex. They are interested in sex. They think about sex. It’s used in movies, music, advertising,” the 42-year-old pastor explained. “We live in a sex-obsessed society. For the church not to talk about it seems to make us irrelevant.”

Someone give this guy a gold star! It would be great if this led to more discussions and classes about sexuality within Christianity, where sex seems to be the most taboo.

…he also believes that the Roman Catholic Church was misguided when it decided – in A.D. 325 – to ban priests from having sexual relations. (The ruling was later extended to banning priests from marrying.)

Yes, and they continue to be misguided by remaining rigid and unchanging. In fact, they are almost moving backward and are certainly limiting their tolerance (recently discussing the possibility of denying communion to politicians who support abortion or divorced persons who have not had their marriages annulled). Like Joe says, “That’s just what we need in this world…less tolerance.”

Clearly, there are differences between the Protestant & Catholic faiths. However, I don’t feel that Catholicism is doing itself any justice by narrowing the playing field, so to speak. There is a lot of truth in the statement the pastor, in that Canadian church, made:

“What we want to do is to say that God has an interest in our sexuality. God invented it. Clearly he had an understanding of what could give us pleasure.”

Pleasure. Doesn’t that sound like a really wonderful thing for which God could gift us?

“a real mensch”

That’s how neighbors described a woman in Graz, Austria who has been accused of slaying her own 4 newborn children (over a series of years), putting 2 of them in a freezer shared by other tenants of the apartment building, one stuffed in a paint can and filled with cement and the fourth in a plastic bag covered by debris in a shed.

That doesn’t exactly cover the definition of mensch in my opinion. Um, in fact, it’s about as polarized as you can get. I know there are a lot of Jewish readers here who will agree with me.

Interestingly enough, the media reports that in Austria there is not much support for pregnant mothers with unwanted pregnancies. So, instead of having an abortion, this woman waited until her children were born, and breathing outside in the world, and killed them.

Now…I bet that many anti-abortionists don’t see much difference in the two, but I have to say that I do. There is a HUGE difference between discontinuing the growth of a 6 week embryo and taking the life of a newborn baby.

Let me put it to you this way – I have had failures to implant at the gestation of 6 weeks. The embryo leaves your body a lot like a period. On the contrary, my son Ari came out with a fully functioning body. Losing the former is not such a big deal compared to what losing the latter would be like.

But, I’m curious about the anti-abortionists out there and their opinion. Of course they are going to say that either way is not the way they would like to see things. I actually agree with that one. But, if they had a choice of which was worse, would they choose first trimester abortion or post-natal slaying?

does this sex education work?

In a stunning and thought provoking post (Abstinence Only) by Guthrie over at Goldberg and Guthrie, I am forced again to think about the sex education programs in this country which are highly funded, yet highly inadequate.

I can’t help but think of a student this last semester in my Human Sexuality class. This woman was in her 50’s at least and seemed to have a naiveté that was shocking based on how many years she has been on this planet. But one day, she commented on how many teen pregnancies there were in addition to the rates of sexually transmitted diseases among teens and couldn’t understand why kids were doing this since her generation would NEVER do something like that. I had to say something, so I looked over at her and said…

American society tends to look upon sexuality in a very puritanical manner, especially when it comes to our children. The majority of Americans believe that the less kids know about sex, the less they will partake in activities that are sexual. Well, nothing could be farther from the truth. Our real crime is not educating our children properly…not being open to questions about sexuality…and worst of all, not ensuring that they know how to protect themselves if they have sex. These things added together make sex the forbidden fruit of teen years. All of the hormones raging without proper information are what is leading us down this dark road. And instead of funding programs that actually TEACH about sex, we’re primarily funding programs that say, “Don’t Do It.”

She was stunned, especially when she looked around at how many people were shaking their heads in approval.

I do understand why people can’t figure this out on their own, though. In order to teach about sexuality, you have to be comfortable with sexuality and most people are NOT comfortable about the topic. Oh, behind closed doors…maybe. But not as a public measure. It’s just unbelievable. I want to walk up to one of these people and say, “Hey, Sparky, how about actually TALKING with your children about such a natural process?” Damn, what a novel idea that is.

What really bugs me here…really, really bugs me is the pubic dollars going to fund what Guthrie suggests is “lying to kids.” Moreover, how there is the underlying religious aspect of these programs which isn’t exactly covert. There’s something terribly wrong with a public program that asks kids, “What would Jesus do?”

Does anyone else notice this downward spiral of the separation of church and state? Does anyone also notice the incredible money going toward this? And most of all, does anyone notice how these things AREN’T working? Can we get a grip, please? Here’s what they do with programs that DO work.

Stepping off high horse now. Definitely check out his post!

Oh, and here’s that idea I think could really work as sex education.

The Twilight Zone Of Queerdom

As if the very nature of a homosexual group opposed to Israel isn’t bizarre enough for the world, they are using the platform of being against alleged Israeli terrorism in order to castigate Palestinians for violence against gays:

Recently, the queer and mainstream press have reported on three Palestinian gay men who say that they were severely abused and humiliated by Palestinian police. One of the young men reportedly escaped the police, only to be threatened by his own family. They have been living underground in Israel for the last several years, and now Israel is deporting them back to Palestine, where they fear being killed as suspected collaborators.

Actually, Israel is the one country in the Middle east where “queers” don’t have to live underground, unless they entered the country illegally. And it is the only country in the Middle East where no one has to worry about being killed for “collaboration”. You would actually have to be arrested, tried, and convicted of a crime before being sentenced to death, and I’m not even sure if the crime of “collaboration” even exists in Israel. Somehow, I doubt it. I would think it would come under the aegis of espionnage, but I know for a fact that it would have to involve actual EVIDENCE of a crime. Readers? Anyone well-versed in Israeli law, don’t hesitate to speak up.

And these people still don’t get it.

And “Professor” Gordon wonders why I see Berkeley as a breeding ground for all kinds of whacked-out pro-“Palestinian” groups with bizarre concepts about Israel.

putting out fires

That’s how I feel this whole morning has been spent. From my personal life where my mother is defiantly refusing to baby-sit Ari while I attend school over her incessant belief that something is wrong with the heating system that is working just fine to the blog world where personalities and ideologies are clashing.

I’d rather not talk about the mother situation because it will just get me more pissed, but I do want to make something clear with regard to this particular blog.

Stats counters are one of the most interesting things to have set up on your blog. One thing that you have to remember to do is to put them on your archive pages as well otherwise you just count those who visit your main page. The counter on this page is set up that way, but I have another invisible one installed on all pages. Let me tell you, there are some pretty interesting searches…especially with the content on this site. Within those searches are questions that people have and I will attempt to answer some of them here.

sex education gone awry

Mothers killng their children always upset me. I’m a mom. I can’t think of any reason, EVER, that would enable a loss of sense so great that I would take my child’s life. But this is going to far!

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (AP) — A woman angry with her 12-year-old daughter for having sex forced the girl to drink bleach and sat on her until the child died, a police detective said.

Here are the details:

She said she poured bleach into Jasmine’s mouth and the child vomited, he said, then sat on her until she stopped breathing, Cotton testified.

Let me tell you that this kind of death was utterly painful for the girl. The bleach would have begun eating her from the inside out and she would have thrown up blood or voided blood from the process. She would have had intense stomach cramps. Her heart would have radically slowed and eventually she would stop breathing. If she had lived beyond all that, her throat would have become so swollen that a tracheotomy would have needed to be performed in order for her to breathe. She would have died if her mom didn’t seek immediate medical attention. Instead, her mom chose to sit on her and watch her die. I wonder if she was looking into the eyes of her little girl…the one she gave birth to just 12 years before. I wonder how her 9-year-old son panicked when she told him this:

If you shed one tear, I will kill you too.

This is just so horrifying that it’s beyond my comprehension.
