The Morons Are Out Again

Well, the Michael (Weiner) Savage thing is now the rage. Per his own mouth…

Now, the illness du jour is autism. You know what autism is? I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they’re silent? They don’t have a father around to tell them, “Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.”

This moron has managed to get his conservative cohorts to actually believe him instead of real science. I’ve read posts that attribute increased diagnosis to bad parenting (correlation is NOT causation…which anyone who knows about science would concur) to Michael’s own comments about parents being parasites on their host children to get services that are not needed. As if fighting for those services is so easy that everyone is rushing right out to do it. Bloody hell. He even mentions that autism is a label of stigma that stays with kids for the rest of their lives and create problems. Well, yeah, if you’re a person who thinks in the dark ages about autism being a disorder in which children should be locked away or who act exactly like Rainman, maybe that’s true. But, if you’re an educated person who knows your facts about autism and that it’s a spectrum disorder (wonder if he comprehends that?…guessing not) you’ll know that early intervention means less support needed later and possibly even being treated to the extent you lose the diagnosis, much like Ari is on his way to do. You know that huge efforts to mainstream our children are being made and being shut down by elitist assholes who want everyone on this earth to be “normal” Stepford kids. Finally, you KNOW that the CDC, in response to believing autism was overdiagnosed at 1 in 166 a few years ago, did their own study, with their own very terrific scientists, to find that it was 1 in 150. Thus, if you believe Michael Savage, you doubt the CDC. Pretty stupid move, if you ask me.

This is just so ridiculous. But, I take solace in it. You see, what will happen if everyone believes this moron is that we’ll lose more funding and won’t be able to get to the bottom of the disorder. With it’s rates of increase, these morons will undoubtedly start to have autism diagnosed in their families very rapidly. Then they can blame their own shitty parenting. Or, should they blame their shitty thinking?

Yeah, you know the answer. It appears as though Savage is the Tom Cruise du jour.

P.S. It’s a shame he’s part of the mishpachah!

  1. Ever dealt with a kid with autism? Takes an incrediable amount of energy to keep the amount of consistency they need.

I’d like to see one of these critics get through one day with a child with autism without having support.

Besides what does “bad parenting” mean? What are the objective criteria? Did the critic follow the family around for a few days/months/years to see the underlying circumstances?

The only thing you can do is not read stupid opinions.

  2. Asrai,

Actually, I do. My older son is autistic which is one of the reasons for writing this post. I agree with what you said but it’s more than not reading stupid opinions. You see, people actually believe this guy and it hurts our fight to find answers. The whole autism community wants this guy fired and fired yesterday. It takes one moron to ruin a bunch of work already done and we’re hoping that most Americans have more intelligence. Time will tell.

    Thanks for popping in.

  3. I thought you’d pick up on this story, Linda.

He lost any credibility with me (not that he ever really had any) with the “I hope you get AIDS and die” remark to a gay caller.

    Fuck ‘im. He’s a lout.

  4. I feel like revoking his tribal membership. MOTs should not bring shame on other MOTs. It’s just not done.

I feel a sickness in the pit of my stomach whenever I see someone using a position of media prominence to spread such idiocy. Unfortunately, the media thing works such that shock jocks get ratings by saying outrageous things that get attention.

If Savage hosted a quilting bee on-air, no one would listen. But if he accuses those blue-haired quilters of fronting a cocaine smuggling ring that uses cancer-stricken Mexican child-laborers as mules to get through airports, then he’s got headlines.

Until we learn to stop turning our heads at the sight of a (figurative) car wreck, this strategy will continue to work like a charm. Their only challenge is to push the envelope to the edge without pushing so far that they lose their access to the levers of media. But in the age of the Internet, even that limit isn’t permanent, as they’ll just find their audience through some other new media channel.

Sigh…I wish we could outlaw stupidity and meanness.

Don’t you just WISH you could do that? I agree with you, totally on that AND the rest.
