Ari & The iPod

With as fast as Ari’s progressing, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that he’s getting into all that can be found on an iPod. He has watched movies on mine, looked at pictures and, of course, listened to music. But my son has a favorite genre. No, really. I don’t think I would have ever guessed this for a son of mine, but he LOVES 70’s Disco/R&B. As one of his caretakers points out, “It could be worse.” That’s true. Anyway, I thought I’d give you a run down of Ari’s playlist.

10 songs, 55.2 minutes, 56.9 MB

Boogie Oogie Oogie (Single Version 2) 5:38
A Taste of Honey

Get Down Tonight (Rick Finch & Tony Batt… 7:44
KC & The Sunshine Band

Hot Stuff (12″ Version) 6:48
Donna Summer

I Feel Love 8:17
Donna Summer

Jungle Boogie 3:07
Kool & The Gang

Kung Fu Fighting 3:54
London Bus Stop

Play That Funky Music 5:00
Wild Cherry

That’s the Way (I Like It) (Rick Finch & To… 5:55
KC & The Sunshine Band

Video Killed the Radio Star 4:14

Y.M.C.A. 4:45
Village People

I realize that Video Killed the Radio Star doesn’t exactly fit into this as you would imagine but it WAS released in 1979 and Ari likes it. Also, wherever possible these songs are funky remakes. There are some that are better as originals, but let’s be clear. I pay for these so I have to like them…and they are funked. The KC & The Sunshine Band songs are AWESOME!

This genre brings back a lot of memories for me. I used to roller skate to every one of these songs at the roller rink on the weekend. I was HUGE into roller skating. I think I had 5 pair at one point. One was used strictly for the rink, though.

Oh, and I can’t listen to the song Hot Stuff without thinking of the movie The Full Monty, when they were in the queue. I giggle every time!

How about you? Does this list bring up any memories?

  1. I love it! Ari would fit right in at our household. We love 70s disco/soul! It just shows he has lots of of boogie oogie oogie. 🙂 He might like some old Stevie Wonder too. Try some Abba – oh I could go on….

  2. LOL I tried Abba…he’s not into it. I haven’t tried Stevie yet, though. What’s really funny is that Josh, my 2.5 year old, is asking to listen to Kung Fu Fighting. They are going to lose their minds when that Kung Fu Panda movie comes out.

I really like the music too. Lots and lots of memories.

  3. This playlist reminds me of every party I ever attended when I was too young to know better.

VKTRS is a perfect bookend to this, um, unique musical era. In my mind, this tune always bridged the fade of disco and the rise of British new wave and rock that followed. Your son has excellent taste.

  4. It’s so fun, isn’t it? My kids are exposed (subjected?) to 60s, 70s and awful 80’s stuff. They also hear lots and lots of folksy stuff. There are the oddball songs that crack me up. Big A loves “Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira and “Fergilicious” by Fergie. Little A loves Blue Moon by The Marcels and Cha-Cha Slide by Mr. C the Slide Man. I think both girls just love to dance :). YMCA is a favorite of both, too.
